RP thread: Dawn and Buffy
Dawn took one last look around her bedroom, making sure she hadn't left anything important behind. It didn't take long to check, though, because the room was basically empty; after she checked the drawer in her nightstand where she'd never kept anything more important than a box of kleenex, she had to admit to herself that she was stalling.

Okay, maybe there was one part of the whole "leaving for college" thing she wasn't looking forward to.

She fiddled with her backpack for a while, rearranging things until she was sure she could get to her money and papers easily, but finally she couldn't put it off any longer.

She went out into the hallway, closing the bedrom door behind her. "Buffy?" she called. "I'm almost ready to go."

[OOC note: This is, obviously, backdated. Ooops.]

"Hey. Wow. You got everything? Though I guess it doesn't matter 'cause I can send along anything you forget, like books or stuff assuming it's not things you can't just buy in LA and jeez, Dawn! I though you were going to Oxbridge or whatever the name of the place is but oh shit I'm babbling."

Is this what mom had felt like? Except that Buffy had only moved a few miles away to a dorm. And her mom had stuffed her bedroom full of boxes about five seconds after Buffy had moved out of it. And moved out less definitively than Dawn had. This place was bare.

"I'm good," Dawn said. "Just hoping I don't get to California before most of my clothes." She smiled at Buffy. "And yeah, I'll probably be calling you as soon as I unpack because I forgot something."

She'd been totally excited about this just this morning. Rome had been awesome, but she was homesick, and at least Los Angeles was in California. And school was going to be great, really, but all of a sudden, Los Angeles seemed a very, very long way away.

"Hey, it'll be just like going home, you know? Maybe you don't remember it much, but we lived in Los Angeles until you were ten. Okay, the Valley, and you'll be in a different part, but, like, not much difference. One freeway ride away. You already speak the language."

Buffy grinned, trying to be encouraging despite the weird feeling in her stomach. And to make things worse, she remembered her mom grinning exactly the same way when Buffy had her last-minute panic attack. And then, a moment of total envy hit her, and she had to keep the grin pasted on. Dawn got to go to college. Buffy had been liking it. No point. She had money. She had freedom. She could do what she wanted. If she wanted to go to school, she could. If she wanted to train Slayers with Giles, she could. If she wanted to get wasted at Cabo Cabo, she could. But that seemed like a bore.

"So, hey. Would it bug you if I set up the Slay shop somewhere else? Like, in another city? Country? Continent? I think I could stay in the same solar system. Maybe. Unless there's something they're not telling me about vampires on other planets." Buffy blinked. Okay. That was out.

Dawn grinned. "Why do you think I picked UCLA? I mean, yeah, great program, good weather, but I could get that a lot of places. I wanted to go back to California for a while." She shrugged. "Guess it still feels like home."

Then she looked up at Buffy, who was still giving her that weird grin. "And I guess that answers your question, right? As long as you don't disappear off the face of the earth or something--which totally rules out Buffy Summers, Interplanetary Slayer."

"Though I could get into that, if they gave me a rocket ship or something. Though spacesuits? Not cute ever." Buffy raised her eyes heavenward. She wouldn't put it past Giles to find a way to send her to Mars and Slay there. If one of his books told him to.

"So yeah, anyway, I'm not in big rush or anything, but I was definitely thinking it's time to end the perma-vacation. And you. You had better do your homework and stuff. They take it way more seriously in college. And I know what dorms are like. Four million things to do that are not writing that paper."
Dawn Summersdawn_bvl on September 19th, 2007 01:34 am (UTC)
"They took homework way more seriously *here* than in Sunnydale," Dawn pointed out. "But yeah, I know. I'll study."

Buffy flipped her hair and thought. What else had bugged her when she was in school? "You have money, so no worries there. Unless your book habit gets way out of control. You already know that I'll stake anybody you date who drives you nuts. Let's see. What else? Dawnie, I am fresh out of helpful advice. This is where it sucks to have me instead of a real mom around."

Buffy scrubbed at her nose. Nope. Not getting teary. Definitely not.

Dawn bit her lip, at a loss for words for a minute. "It doesn't suck," she said finally. "I mean, yeah, it sucks that Mom--" She stopped, swallowing hard. "It sucks that Mom's not here. But you did a pretty decent job."

Are we done here?

Re: [Clearly, OOC]
[Argh, thanks for nudging me; I'd lost track. Let's wrap it up fast so Dawn can snap forward to real time.]

"Thanks, kiddo. I try, but I sometimes thing I just-- I don't know how mom did it. She seemed to know stuff I had no clue about. Though come to think of it, I think she read books. Maybe I shoulda. Aw, hey. Have an awesome time. Don't sleep with any jerks. Be a big genius."

Buffy flung her arms around Dawn and sniffled.

Re: [Clearly, OOC]
"Not sure about the genius thing, but I'll try, okay?" Dawn hugged her back. "It's going to be fine. It'll be next summer before you know it." Okay, maybe not true, but the last thing she needed was for Buffy to start crying. Then she was going to start crying.
